Week of February 18, 2024

As we complete our journey together through the Gospel of Luke, in this season of Lent, we encourage you to read along in the Gospel during the week. We hope that you will spend time taking the daily readings a little deeper and reflecting on how they apply to you personally. One way to do this is using the S-O-A-P-Y method of Bible reading and reflection. A description of this method and an example are available  . . .    If you have questions regarding this method, please feel free to contact Pastor David.

As we enter into the final chapters of the Gospel of Luke, we will be walking with Jesus on his final path to the cross, the tomb, and through to his resurrection!  We will also hear some of his final teachings and see how He contends with the religious leaders in Jerusalem, who are out to get him.  In this week’s readings, Jesus is ready to reveal his identity, as Messiah. His encounters with the religious leaders convinced them that He and His teaching must be stopped.

Monday | Luke 19:28-40

Why do you think Jesus chose to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey rather than walk, as He would normally do?  Notice it is a “multitude” of disciples who begin to praise Jesus, not just the closest 12.  If you were to join a “parade” of people praising Jesus for the “mighty works” He has done, what would you shout out? Make a list. 

Tuesday | Luke 19:41-48 & Luke 13:31-35

What does the fact that Jesus wept over the future demise of Jerusalem say to you about his character and his heart? In Luke 13, Jesus foretold what would happen in Luke 19. Now He enters the city intending to go to the cross for the very people who have been rejecting Him. What goes through your mind and heart as you reflect on his resolve, at this point?

Wednesday | Luke 20:1-18

Why were the Pharisees concerned with where Jesus’ authority came from? Why did Jesus choose not to answer their question? Have you ever questioned Jesus’ authority in your life? Why? 

Who do you think the parable in verses 9-18 is about?  How does it speak to your heart today?

Thursday | Luke 20:19-40

First, the scribes and priests try to trick Jesus into saying something they can use against him. Then the Sadducees do the same. What are your thoughts on Jesus’ ability to respond in a way that confounds the intentions of his enemies? 

In what ways do people today, try to twist the Word of God, in order to discredit Jesus and His Gospel? 

Friday | Luke 20:41-47 & Psalm 110:1-4

Knowing what you do about Jesus, how would answer His question of the religious leaders? In what ways should we take heed of Jesus’ warning about these leaders? 

How might we be led astray by church leaders who have improper motives? What would be the proper test(s) for Christian leaders today?
