Empathy

In Jesus’ ministry, He didn’t just tell the world about love, but He showed it in word and action. One way Jesus showed the love of God was through empathy. Jesus understood the pain and struggle people faced and cared for them where they were at. Jesus didn’t tell people to stop sinning in order to be loved by God. Jesus loved people, healed them, and showed them a reason to follow Him and turn from sin.

Monday | Matthew 9:35-38

When Jesus entered the villages, who did He heal? Did Jesus show partiality to those who believed or those who earned healing? What does Jesus’ compassion toward the people inspire in you to do or say? How do you need the compassion of Jesus in your life?

Tuesday | John 8:1-11

How did the Pharisees and scribes expect Jesus to react to the woman caught in adultery? How did Jesus’ reaction affect the woman, the Pharisees, and the disciples? When, in your life, has pride gotten in the way of empathy?

Wednesday | Hebrews 4:14-16

Is it easy or difficult for you to take your weakness to the feet of Jesus? What prevents you from fully depending on the mercy of Jesus? How does Jesus’ example of grace and mercy differ from how you act, or how others act towards you?

Thursday | Philippians 2:1-11

Does any piece of this passage convict you and your words and actions? What is the purpose of unity, humility, and love among believers in Jesus? Does Jesus’ example show us a different picture than the church today? What needs to change? How can you be a part of that change?

Friday | Romans 12:9-21

Empathy doesn’t just include understanding someone’s pain or struggle but sitting with them in the pain and struggle. What are three tangible ways you can show empathy to someone in your life who is struggling? What would empathy from Jesus look like right now in your life?
