The road to Emmaus is the road we take when we’ve been to Golgotha. It’s the road we take when the other roads we’ve taken turn out to be dead ends. It’s on this road where Jesus meets with us – rekindles the fire in our lives that suffering has tried to extinguish. Read these passages and allow your hearts to burn with hope and joy of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

Monday | Luke 24:1-12

Make a list of all the people Luke mentions. They are all witnesses to the empty tomb. Place yourself on this list and reflect on the impact Jesus’ resurrection has on your life. What does the angel’s message mean to you, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here. He has risen!”

Tuesday | Luke 24:13-35

Note the sadness of these 2 followers of Jesus (Cleopas and wife?). How did Jesus draw them out of their sadness? How were their eyes opened? How does God’s Word help shed light into our broken worlds? What does it mean that their “hearts burned within them”?

Wednesday | Luke 24:36-49

Once again Jesus reveals Himself – this time to His closest disciples. What physical traits do the disciples observe of His resurrected body? Note that Jesus again opens the Hebrew Scriptures to help them understand. What stories might He be sharing from the Old Testament? How does this strengthen your faith?

Thursday | 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, 12-26

Make a list of witnesses to the resurrected Jesus that Paul gives. Why is this important to our faith? How does Jesus’ resurrection give us hope for our own resurrection?

Friday | 1 Peter 1:3-9

What is our inheritance as a follower of Jesus? For what purpose is the testing of our faith by various trials? Give praise to God for all the ways He reminds you of His resurrection power in your life.
