Kingdom Qualities:  Dependence & Devotion

This week’s section from Luke’s Gospel (18:15-30) provides an interesting contrast of openness to the kingdom.  Jesus tells his disciples that they are to be like the babies being brought to him, likely referencing a complete spiritual dependence on him. This contrasts with the rich ruler who wants eternal life but in the end, does not see his need for Jesus. He has his money and power as a source of security.  To what degree do you see your need for Jesus and his kingdom?

Monday | Luke 18:15-17

So often, we feel like we need to earn God's love, His forgiveness, and His presence. Jesus reminds us here the Kingdom belongs to the little children - those who don't earn or "deserve" anything from God. How does this passage influence how you see Jesus? What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God like a child?

Tuesday | Matthew 18:1-6

What would have the disciples expected Jesus to say when they asked Him who was the greatest? How does a lack of humility prevent us from a deeper relationship with Jesus? What would you have to let go of to approach Jesus as a child, humble and believing?

Wednesday | Luke 18:18-30

Why do you think it is difficult for the wealthy/rich to enter the kingdom of God? Is this a literal call to sell everything and give it to the poor? What "heart issue" is Jesus trying to point out with the rich ruler? What things stand in the way of fully depending on God in your life?

Thursday | Psalm 100 (Thanksgiving)

Every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17). On this day of thankfulness, how can we remember the immeasurable blessings God has poured out on us? For those struggling, how can we be thankful when we are in the midst of suffering?

Friday | 1 Timothy 6:6-10; 17-19

The verse "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" is often mistranslated as "money is the root of all evil." What is the difference between these two phrases? How can we be good stewards of what little or much we have? What does contentment in God look like?
